Biblioteca Nazionale situated in the monumental building of the basilica of Santa Croce is one of the most important italian libraries, it has 6 millions of volumes, the shelves cover 135 km that grow every year of about one meter and a half. It is possible to book a free tour of the library.
Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana: designed by Michelangelo, has one of the principal collections of manuscripts in the world and the biggest papyrus collection in the world.
Archivio dell’Opera del Duomo archivio founded in 1296, it collects every documentation about the construction of the “new” Cathedral of Florence, the “Opera del Duomo”.
Biblioteca dell’Accademia della Crusca it is sited in the Medicean Villa of Castello and represents the major italian library of linguistic. Nowadays the library conserves 122.000 volumes, 147 manuscripts, 41 “incunaboli” (old documents) 780 papers, 410 of them are current. The librarian heritage include also a collection unique in the world, that adorns the walls of the central room of the library: the Fondo dei Citati.
