HIDDEN TREASURES OF FLORENCE: THE UPSIDE DOWN BALCONY Borgo Ognissanti 12 - Firenze

Walking along Borgo Ognissanti, a particular  building  will catch your eye immediately. At number 12 in fact you find the “upside-down balcony“ an impressive construction,  far too large for this narrow street, hanging on the facade of a patrician house dating back to the 16th century. The balcony seems   “wrong”  because all architectural elements are mounted upside-down. As the legend goes,  the balcony was  built by the owner of the house, Mr  Baldovinetti, out of spite with the Duke Alessandro de' Medici. The initial project of the balcony was rejected by the Duke, who had promoted a law in favor of more sober and modest decorations.  The owner of the building presented a second project, with little changes, and even this time it was rejected. At the third attempt, the Duke, trying to be irreverent or just fed up with the irritating  requests, wrote on his response:" Yes, on the contrary". Messer Baldovinetti, expressing a true Florentine spirit and applying the answer to the letter, ordered his architect to build the balcony “on the contrary”!
